Northern Virginia Adults Over 50 Are Training for Strength and Longevity

P20 EMS Studios in Herndon and Tysons celebrates Active Aging Week with a month-long strength challenge for adults over 50

HERNDON & TYSONS, VA — October 2026 — As conversations around longevity and healthy aging continue to grow, P20 EMS Studios is seeing the trend firsthand. The majority of P20 clients are in their 50s and 60s, with many continuing to train into their 70s.

For these adults, fitness is increasingly about more than losing weight. They want to maintain muscle, build strength and remain active and independent—but they also want a workout that fits both their bodies and their busy lives.

Those needs are two reasons Connie Ruiz, co-founder of P20 EMS Studios, believes whole-body electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has become especially appealing to adults over 50.

“As we get older, many of us have a knee, back or shoulder that doesn’t work quite like it used to, or we’re dealing with an old injury,” said Ruiz. “That doesn’t mean we should stop strength training and/or are looking to start a strength training program for the first time. Our clients value EMS because it gives them a joint-friendly way to challenge their muscles and build strength while working around those limitations.”

“And people in their 50s and 60s are busy. Many of our clients are still working professionals with demanding careers, families, travel and very active lives. They want an effective strength workout, but they don’t necessarily have 90 minutes to spend in a gym. The efficiency of a personalized 20-minute EMS workout is a big part of why P20 works for them.”

P20 specializes in personalized, one-on-one 20-minute whole-body EMS training. The technology uses electrical impulses to activate multiple muscle groups simultaneously while a trainer guides each client through exercises adapted to the individual’s abilities, goals and physical limitations.

Every October, P20 recognizes Active Aging Week, October 5–11, an international initiative of the International Council on Active Aging, and this year will extend the celebration throughout the month with its Over 50 Active Aging EMS Challenge.

Ruiz says the Challenge reflects a larger message she wants adults to hear about aging.

"Muscle is the organ of longevity, and it’s never too late to get stronger. Strong muscles and strong bones are essential to aging well. Strength helps us stay active and independent, keep doing the things we love, and ultimately live healthier, happier lives".
